This issue brief from the Schuyler Center for Analysis and Advocacy, with support from NYHealth, provides a short overview of the health impact and costs associated with childhood dental disease, and describes evidence-based, cost-effective strategies for prevention.

The habits that result in dental disease are learned at a young age, and once dental disease occurs, it tends to be chronic. Among the different types of dental disease that impact children and adults, cavities are of special concern for children because they are almost entirely preventable. Keeping New York kids cavity-free through effective prevention can be an investment in their health and development.

The Schuyler Center has also issued a related issue brief, “Prevention First: Making Sure New York Smiles,” and fact sheet, “Dental is Fundamental—Ensuring the Smiles of All New Yorkers.”
