In 2008, the New York Health Foundation supported the New York Immigration Coalition’s (NYIC) Health Collaborative, which provides education, communication and outreach skills to diverse immigrant-focused community based organizations (CBOs) that help immigrants access health care.

The Collaborative included two legal services organizations and nine CBOs, representing the Latino, South Asian, Russian, Balkan, Korean, Haitian, and Filipino communities in New York City and Long Island. In this NYHealth-funded report, the New York Academy of Medicine evaluated the activities undertaken by the Collaborative, their outcomes, and likelihood of sustainability after grant funding ends.

The evaluation found the public health insurance program education, training, and leadership provided by the Collaborative facilitates effective direct service and advocacy activities. While the Collaborative was fortunate to identify another year of funding and has continued through 2009, sustainability of the Collaborative is contingent upon future funding and its members’ availability to continue participating.
