Poor rural areas surrounding Monroe, Ontario, and Wayne counties struggle with unmet health care needs such as low rates of child immunizations, high rates of breast cancer, alcoholism, and inadequate medical services.

The MOW Health Project was intended to build on the area’s existing human service outreach network to provide health service outreach and education and to facilitate insurance enrollment in public programs.

Outcomes and Lessons Learned

  • Unfortunately, the project staff encountered a number of obstacles that prevented them from achieving their anticipated results:
  • Database development was delayed as was monthly reporting to project partners.
  • The licensing and training associated with the database were offered without cost to community organizations, which meant that these agencies had no ownership in the outcome of the project.
  • Smaller trainings were required due to scheduling conflicts.
  • Insufficient data for the database were collected and as a result, could not be made available to the community.
