These NYHealth-supported reports, prepared by the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, provide a road map to improve the systems that help New Yorkers eat well throughout their lives.

Nutrition education programs are designed to increase healthy food choices and improve nutrition-related behaviors. However, very little research has been done on how New York State and New York City currently support, implement, and coordinate nutrition education. To strengthen policies and programs, communities, elected officials, local providers, and researchers must understand the complex public health systems that currently support nutrition education at the City and State levels.

Both the City report and the State report offer a road map to further strengthen policies and programs that help New Yorkers buy, grow, prepare, eat, and advocate for healthier foods. The reports give an overview of nutrition education policies and why stronger support is needed for them. Recommendations are included for expanding the scope, reach, and sustainability of nutrition education programs; enhancing local providers’ capacity to implement initiatives; and improving collaboration and coordination.
