The County Health Rankings have been released annually by the University of Wisconsin since 2010. The rankings measure various health indicators across all U.S. counties and evaluate the performance of these counties relative to each other within a state.

In-state rankings allow for easy comparison among counties within a state, but not for evaluating how counties compare nationally.

To provide a national context to the performance of New York State’s counties in health outcomes, this NYHealth issue brief addresses the following questions:
  • How do New York State counties rank in health outcomes compared with counties in other states?
  • Is the disparity between New York’s healthiest and less healthy counties greater or less than the disparities observed in other states?
  • Which New York State counties ranked consistently among the healthiest and the least healthy in 2010 and 2019?
  • Which counties in New York State improved or declined in health outcomes from 2010 to 2019?

The report provides a new perspective on the health of New York’s 62 counties over the past decade, and provides policymakers with additional means of benchmarking county performance.
