Trends in Life Expectancy for New Yorkers

This NYHealth-produced data snapshot looks at trends in life expectancy and mortality within New York State.

New York State has seen a dramatic increase in life expectancy of its residents from 1980 to 2014. In 1980, the State ranked 35th in the nation, with an average life expectancy at birth of 73.2 years. By 2014, New York State jumped to 6th-highest in the nation, as the average life expectancy at birth increased more than 7 years to 80.4.

Using data from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation, this snapshot provides succinct data on where New York State stands compared with other states and nationally in life expectancy and mortality rates, as well as trends by State counties and gender. For example, areas around New York City were generally found to have the longest life expectancies, and women in New York State live about four years longer than men.
