In response to the economic downturn, the New York Health Foundation (NYHealth) worked with the Nonprofit Finance Fund to create a one-time technical assistance (TA) program to help NYHealth grantees build capacity in their financial management capabilities.
Grantees, especially those from smaller organizations, may lack experience developing and implementing long-term strategic fiscal plans that are critical to effectively sustaining their organizations and the projects that represent their mission. In 2010, NYHealth awarded the Nonprofit Finance Fund a grant to develop and lead a TA workshop for selected NYHealth grantees.
Outcomes and Lessons Learned
- Developed workshop curriculum geared for leaders of small and midsize grantee organizations with budgets of $1 million to $10 million dollars;
- Led a half-day workshop, “Managing in a Changed and Changing Economic Reality,” composed of 3 different sessions for 34 NYHealth grantees on September 23, 2010;
- Provided grantees with the necessary guidance and tools to weather challenging economic times and develop sound fiscal management practices; and
- Received positive assessments of the workshop based on data gathered from the surveys. Participants expressed a high level of satisfaction with the workshop presentations and the collaboration and networking opportunities afforded to them.
