Child and Adolescent Health

Although childhood and adolescence are generally healthy times of life, these periods play an important role in shaping lifelong health, learning, and wellbeing. How a child develops during this time affects future cognitive, social, emotional, language, and physical development, which in turn influences school readiness and later success in life. Additionally, behavioral patterns established during adolescence will determine young people’s current health status, as well as risks for developing chronic diseases later in life. Addressing the positive development of young people not only facilitates their health and wellbeing but also reduces the long-term costs of chronic diseases. NYSHealth has supported a range of efforts to improve the development, health, and wellbeing of children and adolescents across New York State.
