Building Healthy Communities Conference Scholarship
May 21, 2019
In a state as large as New York, a steady stream of smart, innovative work is coming from NYSHealth grantees and non-grantees alike that is relevant to NYSHealth’s priority areas of Building Healthy Communities and Empowering Health Care Consumers and its focus area on Veterans’ Health.
These organizations should be elevating their work and informing key stakeholders at regional, statewide, and national conferences, meetings, and other convenings. Yet, because of a lack of resources, they are often unable to do so. To address this issue, NYSHealth is awarding grants through its Sponsoring Conference Participation in Support of Healthy Communities, Consumer Empowerment, and Veterans’ Health Request for Proposals (RFP). Through this RFP, NYSHealth is sponsoring low-resource organizations to attend and present at local, State, and national conferences related to these areas. In 2019, NYSHealth awarded We Run Brownsville a grant to participate in this initiative as part of its efforts to build healthy communities.
Under this grant, We Run Brownsville will send its co-founder and board treasurer to the Greater & Greener 2019: Exploring National Connections conference. This conference will offer workshops, discussions, and lectures on how urban parks can be designed, developed, programmed, funded, and sustained. Attending the conference will allow We Run Brownsville to learn from other leaders and shareholders, expand its network of public health professionals working to build healthier communities, and refine professional development skillsets. It also will support We Run Brownsville’s ability to amplify its voice and leverage its knowledge as powerful advocacy tools in shaping the future of Brownsville as it undergoes changes from increased gentrification. This conference will help We Run Brownsville gain a deeper understanding on how to systematically shape healthier communities.
