The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded University Settlement Society of New York a grant to address social isolation, loneliness, and health needs among older adults in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, University Settlement will provide services and support for homebound seniors to remain healthy and engaged with their community. In response to the pandemic, University Settlement will expand its remote programming to maintain regular contact with homebound seniors, perform wellness checks, assist with benefits, and provide telehealth services. It will also provide necessary in-person deliveries of meals, medications, and other supplies. Additionally, University Settlement will develop a mutual aid network to connect homebound seniors with community volunteers to assist with delivering groceries and other resources.
