The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded the United Way of Long Island a grant to support the health and safety of homebound seniors during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, the United Way of Long Island provided a free health and safety outreach program for seniors who are sheltering in place during the COVID-19 pandemic. It employed in-home caregivers to provide critical services such as conducting screening assessments, assisting with daily tasks, and connecting seniors to loved ones and health care professionals over the internet. In addition to providing in-home services, the United Way of Long Island conducted door-to-door screening assessments; collected and monitored patient information such as symptoms and patient-reported outcomes; and provided educational materials, medicine, food, and other essentials.
