The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded The New York State Association of County Health Officials (NYSACHO) a grant to assist rural health departments across New York State in their emergency response efforts during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, NYSACHO supported health departments serving rural and underserved communities with their COVID-19 emergency response efforts. NYSACHO offered the local health departments technical assistance and resources to help them respond to a range of issues, including epidemiological investigations, surveillance, testing, contact tracing, and, eventually, vaccination programs. NYSACHO facilitated mini-grants for local health departments that provided flexible dollars to complement enhanced funding from the federal Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Support for projects focused on COVID-19 responses to addressing food insecurity; supporting vulnerable populations; developing community messaging, education, or campaigns; establishing response clinics; and expanding testing support to vulnerable populations.
