The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded The Mission Continues a grant to combat social isolation and mental health issues among veterans during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, The Mission Continues will engage and empower veterans across the New York City metro region through opportunities for service, personal growth, and connectedness. The Mission Continues will partner with NYC Department of Veterans’ Services and the Mayor’s Office of ThriveNYC on Mission: VetCheck, an initiative to provide buddy checks and connect veterans to vital services such as free meals, COVID-19 test sites locations, and mental health resources. It will also coordinate virtual social events to combat social isolation among veterans. Additionally, The Mission Continues will facilitate virtual service projects that will enable local veterans to serve and engage with their communities. When it becomes safe to do so, the service projects will expand to in-person projects conducted throughout the five boroughs.
