The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded The Campaign Against Hunger (TCAH) a grant to improve food security among veterans in New York City during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, TCAH partnered with New York City agencies and community-based organizations to pack and distribute nutritious food for veterans and their families facing severe hardships. Many military families and veterans are struggling financially and facing unemployment, with some relying on soup kitchens and food pantries. TCAH leveraged new and existing partnerships to provide COVID-19 education, outreach, and relief efforts for the veteran community across the five boroughs and helped them meet their food and other basic needs.
