The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded the Staten Island Performing Provider System (SI PPS) a grant to ensure veterans have access to medical and social support resources during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, SI PPS will partner with local organizations, service providers, and veterans organizations to identify and support Staten Island veterans affected by the pandemic. Through its Social Determinants of Health (SDOH) program and app, SI PPS will provide outreach to and assess veterans for new and/or worsening SDOH needs related to COVID-19, veteran-specific behavioral health needs, and emergency social and medical needs. It will then refer and connect veterans to necessary resources, including critical materials such as masks and health supplies; medical and social services; and food and housing security support programs. SI PPS will also analyze survey and intake data to better understand veterans’ needs and improve its referral platform.
