The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded Project EATS a grant to address the nutrition and social support needs of residents of Brownsville and East New York during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, Project EATS packaged and distributed fresh produce from its urban farms, prepared meals, and non-perishable goods to residents of Brownsville and East New York. It also produced and distributed a weekly newsletter with community information, nutrition facts and recipes, online activities and games, and learning content for youth. Additionally, Project EATS provided opportunities and activities that enabled community members to create or experience artistic projects together while practicing social distancing.
