The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded the Physician Affiliate Group of New York (PAGNY) Health & Research Foundation a grant to expand its program to provide emotional and peer support and mental health first aid to frontline health care workers during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, PAGNY expanded its Frontline Emotional Supports Program to frontline health care workers across New York City. The program provided resilience and mental health training sessions for physicians and health care providers on a range of issues, including coping with grief; managing stress and anxiety both at work and home; recognizing trauma and signs of mental health distress in themselves, peers, and their families; and acting effectively during a crisis. Through an outreach program, trained crisis counselors checked in on and offered supportive resources and services to clinicians dealing with the COVID-19 pandemic. Additionally, PAGNY facilitated virtual support groups for physicians and other health care professionals who may have been suffering from PTSD, depression, anxiety, and other traumas in the wake of the pandemic.
