The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded the New York State YMCA Foundation a grant to improve the physical and mental health of school-age children across New York State during the pandemic.

Under this grant, the New York State YMCA Foundation will equip YMCAs across the State with trainings, physical activity curriculum, and video lessons geared to school-age children. It will partner with the CATCH Global Foundation to provide YMCAs with the evidence-based CATCH “Restart Smart” training program, which offers practical solutions and strategies for physical education and nutrition education. The program will provide YMCA site leaders with easy ways to facilitate learning and activities for children in both online and socially distant, in-person settings. The YMCAs will be equipped with virtual and in-person curriculum and equipment to actively engage school-age children in activities that help them to identify healthy foods and increase their amount of moderate to vigorous physical activity each day.
