Nonprofit organizations of all sizes have struggled to respond to the health needs and the economic devastation caused by the COVID-19 pandemic.

As more nonprofits emerge from the crisis phase into a strategic recovery phase, they are finding themselves in uncharted waters. Government relief through the Paycheck Protection Program and Emergency Injury Disaster Loans has greatly bolstered the ability of many nonprofits to weather the pandemic, but still as many as 30% of nonprofits face the risk of insolvency. In 2020, the Hudson Valley Funders Network (HVFN) partnered with the New York Council of Nonprofits (NYCON) to survey regional nonprofits and assess their needs. The survey highlighted four high-level capacity needs: 1) digital fundraising; 2) planning and strategy; 3) finance operations and technology; and 4) partnerships, mergers, and alliances. Since then, HVFN has engaged NYCON to provide direct technical assistance focused on those needs. In 2021, NYHealth awarded NYCON a grant to provide NYHealth grantees with technical assistance to support COVID-19 recovery and acclimation to a post-pandemic landscape.

Under this grant, NYCON will expand its technical assistance service offering to NYHealth grantees, free of charge. It will provide technical assistance on a broad array of topics, drawing from its multi-disciplinary staff, including attorneys and finance experts. It will work collaboratively with NYHealth staff to conduct outreach and to facilitate connections between NYCON and NYHealth grantees. It will also provide a series of customized webinar trainings designed for NYHealth grantees, as well as access to other resources such as policy information and alerts.
