The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYHealth awarded Iraq and Afghanistan Veterans of America (IAVA) a grant to connect veterans and their families to resources and support during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, IAVA worked to ensure that veterans and their families across New York State could immediately access the resources, information, advocacy, and support they needed during the COVID-19 crisis. Through its rapid response referral program, IAVA provided 24/7 direct peer support, comprehensive care management, and resource connections (for food and other basic needs, assistance with medical bills, and mental health, employment, and housing services) to veterans and their families. IAVA also conducted targeted outreach to veterans through its membership network, programmatic partners, and social media. Additionally, IAVA identified gaps in available services and bridge those gaps by engaging with new partners and referral sources.
