The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into peoples lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.

During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded Henry Street Settlement a grant to provide case management and nursing services to vulnerable older adults on the Lower East Side during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under this grant, Henry Street Settlement will build its capacity to provide increased case management and nursing services to low-income, socially isolated older adults, with a focus on Chinese-speaking residents. Henry Street Settlement will employ outreach programming to identify and connect older adults to relevant social, health care, nutrition, and financial services. It will conduct holistic intake assessments and provide individualized coordinated care plans and weekly check-ins with clients. Henry Street Settlement will also continue to provide remote nursing services such as counseling, crisis management, and medication management. Additionally, Henry Street Settlement will increase its delivery of food and essential supplies to homebound seniors by expanding its Meals on Wheels program and launching a pop-up pantry for older adults who are ineligible or unable to access other City-supported meal programs.
