Double Up Food Bucks New York: Innovating Technologies and Expanding Geographies

The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.
During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded Field & Fork Network a grant to address food insecurity among New York State’s most nutritionally vulnerable residents during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under this grant, Field & Fork will increase the reach of its Double Up Food Bucks program to make healthy, nutritious foods more accessible and affordable to New Yorkers receiving Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits. Double Up Food Bucks is a nutrition incentive program that gives SNAP recipients increased access to affordable fresh fruits and vegetables through a dollar-to-dollar match to their benefits at farmers markets and farm stands. Field & Fork will work with farmers markets, mobile markets, and small retail and grocery sites to offer the program to SNAP recipients. It will target communities with the greatest needs in urban, suburban, and rural settings across the State to expand and scale up Double Up Food Bucks during the pandemic.
