The global coronavirus has brought uncertainty and anxiety into people’s lives, workplaces, and neighborhoods, particularly for those who work to improve the health of our communities.
During this difficult time, many organizations across New York State are working tirelessly to keep people safe, especially the most vulnerable. In response, NYSHealth is supporting statewide and local efforts to address emerging health care and public health needs in the wake of the pandemic. In 2020, NYSHealth awarded the Adirondack Foundation a grant to help upstate farmers deliver healthy produce to low-income families in the Bronx during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Under this grant, the Adirondack Foundation will coordinate with farmers and community partners to deliver healthy produce to food-insecure families in the Bronx. A weekly transport schedule will help give upstate farmers a regular downstate market for their nutritious produce. Food will be distributed to families who have lost employment, have members who are currently incarcerated or are on parole, and who struggle to access fresh food in their neighborhoods.
