School gardening, hands-on cooking, food justice education, health literacy – by any name nutrition education is more important than ever for students’ health, academic achievement, and development as 21st century citizens. All New York City students should have access to great nutrition education. Yet nearly half of our schools lack programming from one of the 40+ organizations offering nutrition education to city schools, according to the recent “A is for Apple” report from the Laurie M. Tisch Center for Food, Education & Policy, Program in Nutrition, Teachers College Columbia University.

Philanthropy New York’s Health Working Group—in collaboration with Community Food Funders—invites you to a conversation about the current status of nutrition education programs (NEPs) in NYC schools, as well as the characteristics, distribution, and policy context in which they operate. How can the funding community best leverage its resources and influence to achieve greater equity in nutrition education so that all students have access to these opportunities?
