Health care providers now offer more ways to access care than ever before, adding convenient alternatives to the emergency room, such as urgent care and telemedicine, to their mix of services. But patients still struggle to find the option that’s right for them.

Patients’ responsibility for their own health costs has risen dramatically in the past decade, but the tools that would allow them to seek low-cost, high-quality care haven’t kept pace. The Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services started requiring hospitals to post their charges online Jan. 1, but experts have cautioned these “list prices” are of dubious value.

To look at some of the efforts underway to bring pricing information to patients, Crain’s New York Business will call on experts from the payer, provider and patient advocacy communities. The event will include a discussion of the types of information patients need to access high-value care.
