As the U.S. has continued to engage in numerous wars for more than a decade and half, our country has learned many lessons.

Perhaps most important is that, in light of this challenging operating tempo, the issues our veterans and service members face do not affect them alone–their spouses, caregivers, and children often face the same or similar challenges as they do. Numerous services have been expanded, research has been conducted, and legislation has been passed to focus on the needs of those in military and veteran communities who have not worn the uniform. However, more work needs to be done to provide adequate resources for these unique populations.

Improving veterans’ health means focusing on more than just the veterans themselves. A holistic view of the needs of veterans, service members, and their communities is key to understanding the broader context around veterans’ health needs.

Please join NYHealth for a conversation with Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families; Molly Weston Williamson, Staff Attorney at A Better Balance; and Raquel Derrick, a 2017 Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow for New York State and Founder of Family Operating Base, for a conversation about the use of research, legislation, and innovation to address the needs of these vulnerable communities.
