Scalable Solutions for Implementing High-Quality Primary Care

On June 29th, NYHealth hosted a webinar discussion on a new report on primary care released by a committee convened by the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM).

Primary care is the foundation of a high-functioning, high-quality, and equitable health care system. Research shows that increased access to primary care is associated with fewer hospital visits, emergency department visits, and surgeries. Yet, primary care represents only an estimated 5–7% of health care spending in the United States.

In May, a committee convened by NASEM released a new report, “Implementing High-Quality Primary Care: Rebuilding the Foundation of Health Care.” A key takeaway from the report is that primary care is a common good, which makes the strength and quality of the country’s primary care services a public concern.

Chris Koller, President, Milbank Memorial Fund, and NASEM committee member, explored the report’s findings and implications for New York State. The session highlighted how high-quality primary care in the United States can be implemented; approaches for rebalancing health care spending and payment toward primary care; and scalable strategies by some state Medicaid agencies to improve primary care access.
