On July 21, 2020, NYHealth hosted a webinar on the impact of COVID-19 on survivors of domestic violence and their families in the New York City metropolitan areas.

Before the coronavirus pandemic, about 1 in 4 women and nearly 1 in 10 men experienced sexual violence, physical violence, or stalking by an intimate partner. The increased financial and health stressors that accompany the coronavirus pandemic have caused surges in domestic violence worldwide.

Social distancing, crucial to limiting the spread of COVID-19, often requires survivors to shelter in place with their abusers. As the social, economic, and public health environments have increased the risk of domestic violence, survivors’ access to resources has also been constrained.

Ashleigh Washington, M.S.W., Senior Director of Learning and Staff Development at Safe Horizon, examined the emotional, psychological, and economic implications of COVID-19 for survivors of domestic violence and strategies for supporting them.
