As the U.S. has continued to engage in numerous wars for more than a decade and half, our country has learned many lessons. Perhaps most important is that, in light of this challenging operating tempo, the issues our veterans and service members face do not affect them alone—their spouses, caregivers, and children often face the same or similar challenges as they do.

On February 22, 2018, NYHealth hosted a conversation about the needs of military and veteran communities. Panelists were Kathy Roth-Douquet, CEO of Blue Star Families; Molly Weston Williamson, Staff Attorney at A Better Balance; and Raquel Derrick, a 2017 Elizabeth Dole Foundation Fellow for New York State and Founder of Family Operating Base. The speakers discussed their personal and professional experiences advocating for and being a part of military and veteran communities, as well as the importance of research, legislation, and innovation in addressing the needs of this population.
