Speaker Biographics Strategic Assessment of New York State’s Regional Population Health Investments The Role of Hospitals in Improving Non-Medical Determinants of Community Population HealthDr. David Lee, an Emergency Medicine physician, discussed the innovative method of using emergency room claims data, existing geographic health data, and address data to conduct a geospatial analysis to identify hot spots of chronic disease, particularly in rural communities such as Sullivan County.
Dr. Lorna Thorpe, a member of the NYC Macroscope development team, described how the project incorporates data from 700,000 City residents gathered from primary care providers that share electronic health record data with the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene.
Topics covered by the panel included the sensitive balance of privacy and surveillance, the inclusion of marginalized communities when monitoring groups as a whole, and the potential value of untapped data sets in improving health outcomes.
