Patients should be partners in their health care—whether in the exam room or at the policy table. At the clinical level, patients should have access to their own health information and have a voice in health care decision-making. Patients and consumers also need to help drive and inform decisions that affect health care quality, access, and costs. Although patients often experience the health care system at both its best and its worst, they don’t always know what to do when the system hasn’t worked in their favor. Over the last few years, NYSHealth has supported projects across New York State to empower and train patients to advocate for themselves at the policy level.
On October 11, 2019, NYSHealth hosted a discussion on activating patients as advocates to advance change.
