The following is a statement from New York Health Foundation President and CEO James R. Knickman reflecting on Governor Cuomo’s impact on New York’s health system.

“Governor Mario Cuomo was an innovative leader and a passionate advocate for the health of residents across New York State. He introduced important public health measures that became models for the nation, including the creation of the Child Health Plus program to provide subsidized health insurance coverage for children years before a similar federal program was introduced. He introduced programs that made prescription drugs more affordable for seniors. Governor Cuomo established the State’s AIDS Institute during his first year in office and pushed for services, research, education, and funding to combat the AIDS epidemic. Under Governor Mario Cuomo’s leadership, New York State was the first in the nation to enact seat belt laws. We join the millions of New Yorkers and others throughout the nation in mourning Governor Cuomo’s loss and extend our deepest sympathies to his family, including our Board member, his daughter Dr. Margaret I. Cuomo.”
