In April 2009, the Food Trust (with contributions from the New York Supermarket Commission, the Food Industry, Alliance of New York State, and officials from the City and State of New York) released “Stimulating Supermarket Development: A New Day for New York.”

The report details recommendations for stimulating supermarket development in New York City—a key to increasing the availability of nutritious, affordable food in underserved communities and to combating obesity, diabetes, and other diet-related diseases.

The report highlights nine recommendations for supermarket development in New York State. The recommendations include investing in and supporting existing supermarkets and infrastructure, addressing financing and tax barriers for development, providing accurate market research to industry members, and improving transportation for consumers. This report is a powerful initial step towards increasing access to healthy food in underserved communities throughout New York State.
