On June 25, 2014, New York State’s health insurance exchange, NY State of Health, released demographic enrollment data on the nearly 1 million New Yorkers who enrolled in health plans from October 1, 2013 through April 15, 2014.

The data, which represent the first-year open enrollment period, show that more than 80% of enrollees reported being uninsured at the time of application, enrollment occurred in every county in the state and across all health plans, and across a mix of age groups. From October 1, 2013 through April 15, 2014, 960,762 New Yorkers enrolled into a health plan through the exchange.

The report shows great progress toward reaching the estimated 1.2 million New Yorkers who are expected to gain health insurance coverage when health reform is fully implemented. To advance the implementation of health reform in New York State, the New York Health Foundation (NYHealth) supports a range of outreach and enrollment efforts to ensure that as many New Yorkers as possible gain health insurance coverage.

The resources and materials below have been developed by NY State of Health. Policymakers, organizations conducting enrollment, and health care advocates can use this data to better understand the health insurance landscape and opportunities for coverage in their communities.
