The Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration Office of Applied Studies has administered the National Survey on Drug Use and Health (NSDUH) annually since 1991.

The survey, which was originally known as the National Household Survey on Drug Abuse or NHSDA has been administered periodically since 1972. The survey targets a sample of approximately 67,500 Americans ages 12 and older, and covers a range of issues including use of illicit drugs; alcohol, tobacco, and substance use; dependence and treatment; and prevalence and treatment of mental health problems. Results from the 2007 NSDUH also include data on co-occurring substance use and mental health disorders.
