A shortage of primary care providers, distance from medical centers, and a lack of resources are all issues that inhibit the quality of care rural health care networks are able to provide. The challenges these health care networks face are diverse: in Chautauqua County, the closure of a hospital’s maternity unit put the health of the area’s expecting mothers and newborn children at serious risk; in Glens Falls, the high incidence of diabetes among the population has strained the local hospital’s ability to provide high-quality care; and in Jefferson County, a variety of improvements are needed to ensure the health care system provides its patients with high-quality care.
